Map of the Pacific as it was known in the late 1600’s.  This map of South America and the Pacific shows the track of the Dutch explorerJoacob le Maire, who came from the Dutch city of Horn and who, in 1616, discovered the Straits of Le Maire, named Cape Hoorn, and sailed the first vessel around “Cape Horn.” Le Maire made many new discoveries during the voyage across the Pacific to Jakarta.
