Fortune Teller with Umbrella by Nyozan (19077)

Edo Period (1600-1868) Japanese wood netsuke of a fortune teller with an umbrella carrying a box for materials for her trade.  She is wearing geta which are wooden shoes that keep feet clean when the ground is wet or raining. She wears a tenugui or a folded cloth over her head to protect the hair when cleaning etc. This netsuke is simply done but expressively carved in a black hardwood.
