Heian Court Nobles (19879)

1930’s 6-panel Japanese screen of a Heian style painting of 3 court nobles in a boat amidst waves. This is a “tale of Genji” painting done in the Nihonga school style.  Genji is playing a lute for the women and singing.  The women are covering their mouth to show a blush, as there must be some lyrics that aresuggestive at least.Genji is the Don Juan of Japanese literature and is being shown here in his playboy mannerism.
