Edo Period (1600-1868) boxwood Japanese netsuke of Tekkai Sennin. This wood netsuke is beautifully carved and patinated. The image is of a sennin (immortal who lives in the mountains). Because he is carrying a staff, he is identified as Tekkai who always has a staff and a gourd. He stands on one leg and has a wonderful expression of movement as though ready to blow his spirit wherever he wishes, which is his mystical power.
